Murmansk. Schooner

A schooner rests at its mooring in the Murmansk roadstead, two masts tipped against a pale arctic sky. Pyotr Konchalovsky handles the harbor scene with broad, loaded brushwork and cold, salted color. Slate water chops beneath the hull, broken into short dabs of grey and steel blue. The rigging reads as fine dark crosshatching over the sky, while a rust-red gunwale and weathered timber pier anchor the foreground. Low hills crowd the far shore under a white northern glare. It belongs in a study lined with nautical charts, or an entryway where the hard light of a far port cuts through an ordinary morning.
