Mtsyri. Chance of Rain

Storm light banks low over a Caucasus mountainside in Mtsyri. Chance of Rain, Pyotr Konchalovsky answering Lermontov and his runaway novice with weather instead of words. Grey cloud sits in thick slabby strokes, stacked like wet stone. Below, slopes of olive and burnt ochre break into short diagonal dabs, grasses dragged sideways by wind, while a cold pale seam of light still holds along the horizon. Nothing is smoothed; the brush keeps the gust in it. Best beside a reading chair or in a dim study, where a gathering sky overhead keeps company with the one in the paint.
