Mountains Soshing

Blue ridges fold into one another like cloth gathered by an unseen hand. Mountains Soshing carries Nicholas Roerich at his most meditative, where stone behaves like fabric and distance becomes color. Layer upon layer of cobalt and slate climbs toward a pale summit, each ridge outlined in the crisp contour he used to separate plane from plane. The foreground reads almost flat, tempered ultramarine over a ground that still shows the drag of the brush. Higher up, the tones thin to a cold lavender, the kind of hue that only arrives in thin mountain air. A study, a hallway, or the wall above a low shelf: anywhere a quiet horizon is welcome.
