Mountain Slope

A mountainside tilts across the picture plane in bands of moss green, slate blue, and pale cream, the diagonal held together by Moser's clean, architectural line. Trees climb the incline in flattened clusters, their crowns reduced to rounded shapes that echo one another up the slope. Koloman Moser, a founding figure of the Vienna Secession, turns landscape into pattern here, letting color fields do the work of depth and distance. The sky reads as quiet gold behind the ridge.
