Mountain Lake

Still water holds the snow ridges whole. Mountain Lake compresses the high country into a basin of blue-green water ringed by scree and hard peaks, painted by Nicholas Roerich with mineral clarity. Tempera handling shows everywhere: dry, matte, each ridge laid in thin planes of ultramarine and violet shadow. Snow sits as unmixed white in crisp slabs. Below, the lake carries the reflection upside down, broken only by a low spit of dark stone. A study or library suits it best; cold blues and the silence of altitude read strongest against warm wood, leather, and lamplight.
