Peaks line up across the horizon in Cuno Amiet mountain chain at sunset, their ridgelines dissolving into a sky of burning rose and molten apricot. Amiet, the Swiss colorist who spent decades painting the Oschinensee valley around his home in Oschwand, built the whole composition from slabs of pigment rather than drawn contour. Rose, violet, and gold stack in short loaded strokes until rock and light become nearly the same substance. The foreground slopes away in deepening shadow while the snow catching the last sun burns almost orange against the darkening blue above. A study, hallway, or living room with plain walls gives this dusk its full charge.
