Mount Fuji

Snow crowns the cone of Fuji while its base rests in deep blue shadow, a single volcanic silhouette painted by Nicholas Roerich. The volcano fills the middle distance like a held breath. Roerich builds the mountain from layered planes of cobalt and silvered white, the snowcap breaking across the summit in hard, crystalline facets. Below, foothills in muted violet and slate descend toward a still foreground, thin brushwork catching the cold clarity of high altitude air. The famous symmetry of Mount Fuji is tempered here by a painterly tilt, as if seen from a passing ridge. A quiet study, tea room, or reading nook suits this presence of sacred Japan, its calm summit holding a wall without effort.
