Mount Cassis

Sunlight whitens the great rock above Cassis, scrub pine and dry grass clinging to its pale flanks. In Mount Cassis, Pyotr Konchalovsky paints the Mediterranean south in heavy, sunlit color. He builds the slope in slabs of chalk white, ochre and burnt sienna, each stroke laid on thick as mortar. Violet shadow pools in the ravines, and the sea below holds one band of deep ultramarine. A few dark trees stitch the ridgeline. A stairwell, sunroom or dining room with plain plaster walls suits it; the hot southern palette reads strongest where daylight falls hard and the rock can glow.
