Most zima

A stone span crosses a river sealed under ice, dark arches standing in a white expanse. Ferdynand Ruszczyc gave the scene its name, Most zima, Polish for winter bridge. The paint lies on in heavy ridges, worked like packed snow. Umber water slides beneath the arches, bare trees line the far bank, and a low pewter sky presses the valley into silence. Grey crosshatching knits frost to shore. It belongs in a study with deep shelves, a flagstone entryway, or a reading nook under a north window, wherever the cold months feel close.
