Mosque Gate

A carved mosque gate fills the frame, its pointed archway open onto a courtyard washed in late light. Sevket Dag painted these threshold scenes with a quiet devotion to stone and shadow. Look at the masonry: blocks of honeyed limestone rendered in short, confident strokes, each seam of mortar visible. The timber door leaves sit half open, studded with iron, and the tiled lunette above the arch carries cobalt and green glaze against weathered ochre. Small figures pass through the gate, scaled down by the sheer dignity of the architecture. It belongs in an entryway or a study, somewhere a doorway greets you on the way in.
