Moscow. View of Kremlin from Zamoskvorechie

Tent roofs and gilded cupolas rise over the Moskva in Moscow. View of Kremlin from Zamoskvorechie, a Nicholas Roerich composition painted from the far southern bank. Tempera builds the brickwork in dusty rose against a leaden, silvered sky. The river below holds long blurred reflections of crenellated walls and towers, while small parish domes and low rooftops of the district crowd the foreground. Everything sits hushed under the haze. A study or reading room suits its quiet tonality, where the hazy grandeur of the old capital reads best in low evening light.
