Gold glass tesserae blaze across the vault, scattered over deep lapis blue. This is Józef Mehoffer at his most ornamental, the mosaic in the Armenian Cathedral in Lviv rendered in every glittering fragment. Look closely and the surface breaks into thousands of small squares, each set at a slightly different angle so the light never settles. Cobalt, emerald and burnished gold interlock around sacred figures, their faces calm beneath halos, their drapery drawn with the flowing line of Young Poland decoration. A dim hallway or study gains from this kind of depth, where gold catches lamplight at dusk and the blue keeps its cool hold even in daylight.
