Morocco

Flat-roofed dwellings climb a sunbaked slope, North Africa rendered through the eye of Nicholas Roerich in his painting Morocco. Cubical houses stack like masonry blocks, their ochre and umber walls absorbing desert light. Roerich builds the scene in layered planes of terracotta, dusty rose, and deep violet shadow, the kind of tonal discipline he carried from his Russian landscapes into warmer latitudes. A narrow sky, pale as bleached linen, presses down on the rooftops. Every wall edge is drawn firm, almost architectural, while the ground below dissolves into soft washes of sand and rust. It suits a study or hallway where low, earthy color dominates, bringing warmth to interiors built around wood, leather, and stone.
