Moonlight, Reykjavík

Moonlight turns the harbor of Reykjavík to hammered silver in this night scene by Asgrimur Jonsson, the Icelandic painter who gave his country a landscape tradition of its own. The moon rides high, a pale disc in an indigo sky, throwing one long path of light across black water. Low timber rooftops line the shore and a dark mountain ridge closes the horizon, all of it worked in short, loaded strokes of oil paint, darkness breathing between the highlights. It suits a quiet study or a bedroom at the back of the house, where lamplight meets the water halfway and the harbor keeps its cold shine.
