Monterey Forest

Cypress trunks rise in twisted columns, their dark silhouettes crowded against a pale Monterey sky. Guy Rose found his subject here in the wind bent trees of the central California coast, where fog softens every edge. The grove fills the frame from root to crown. Cool grays and silver greens dominate, broken by warm ochre where sun strikes a trunk. Brushwork follows the grain of bark, loose and quick, while the canopy dissolves into soft scumbled light above. Depth comes from overlapping trunks rather than horizon. A reading nook, hallway, or quiet study suits its muted, moody palette.
