Monterey Cypress

A wind-bent cypress leans against the sky, its dark canopy flattened by salt air. Guy Rose painted the tree as a monument, roots gripping granite above the breaking surf. Brushwork rides the wind. Olive and deep green foliage sweeps sideways in loaded strokes, while the trunk twists silver-grey where bark strips bare in coastal gales. Behind it, the Pacific thins to a hazy band of pale blue and pearl, warm light pooling along the headland grass. A study, hallway, or reading room with an ocean-facing window suits this California coast scene well.
