Monhegan (Vagueness)

Sea fog settles over the island of Monhegan in this study by Nicholas Roerich, titled Monhegan (Vagueness). Land and water dissolve into one another at the edges. Broad washes of slate and pewter grey carry the cliff forms, painted with the loose, tempera-like handling Roerich favored in his American coastal work. Only the dark shoulder of the headland holds its contour; everything above it blurs into a pale, milky sky. The water below sits nearly still, a single band of muted blue grey. A quiet choice for a study, hallway, or reading corner where restraint matters more than color.
