About this work

Monhegan (Study)

Monhegan rises from a cold Atlantic swell, its granite headland pushed up against the wind. This study by Nicholas Roerich captures the Maine island in broad, decisive strokes. Sea and rock hold the picture. Look at the paint handling. Broad planes of slate and grey-violet build the cliffs, while the water carries colder greens beneath a pale, wind-scoured sky. Loose brushwork in the foreground suggests surf breaking over dark ledges, every mark laid down fast, as if painted outdoors against the salt air. Suited to a study, hallway, or reading room where northern light and coastal subject matter can carry the wall.
