Monhegan (Study)

Maine sea light breaks over Monhegan in this Nicholas Roerich study, a small-scale working of the island subject the painter returned to again and along the Atlantic shore. Everything here is compressed, urgent, direct. The rock face carries thick, loaded pigment in slate and umber, brushed in broad diagonal strokes that follow the granite grain. Above it, the sky thins to a wash of cold blue, almost translucent where it meets the horizon. No boats, no figures. Only the mass of the island against weather moving in from open water. Suited to a study, a hallway, or any quiet corner where a rough northern coastline can hold its own against plain walls.
