Monhegan (study)

Spruce crowns a bare granite summit in Monhegan (study), Nicholas Roerich pushing the Maine island into a single tense composition of rock and sky. Water presses against the shore below in bands of pewter and cold green. Everything here reads as rapid observation. Short loaded strokes of tempera-like paint build the headland, while thin washes leave the heavens raw and luminous. Fog softens the horizon, so the landmass seems to float rather than sit, its dark ridge cutting diagonally across pale air.
