Monhegan (Shining of night)

Moonlight breaks over Monhegan, and Nicholas Roerich answers it with a nocturne of granite and tide. Shining of night turns the Maine island into a study of silver on dark water. Tempera gives the surface a chalky density: a black headland shears into the Atlantic, a pale track of moonlight widens across the swell, and gulls hang in the last indigo light. The rock is built from slabbed planes of slate and pewter. In a bedroom or reading nook it works like a held breath, the kind of seascape that quiets a room after dark and rewards a second look at close range.
