About this work

Monhegan Island, Maine

Monhegan Island, Maine shows a headland rearing out of cold Atlantic water, painted by Robert Henri with thick, loaded brushwork. Dark rock dominates the foreground, its facets built from slab-like strokes of umber, olive and slate blue. Sea and sky meet in a pale band, and a few whitecaps flicker along the base of the cliffs. The paint sits high on the surface, each wave of the palette knife or bristle brush left visible. Gulls, salt spray, the smell of spruce at the top of the rise: Henri compresses all of it into one rugged coastal scene. Suits a study, hallway or rooms that favor bold American landscapes.
