Monhegan (Hope)

Surf explodes white against dark granite in Monhegan (Hope), a coastal subject Nicholas Roerich painted while living on that windswept island off the Maine coast. The artist built the image in tempera, layering slate and cobalt over deep umber stone until the island reads as one dark mass. A pale seam of light runs along the horizon, and the sky thins to chalk above it. Every contour stays hard and clean. Hope earns its title in that thin bright line beneath the headland. A study, a reading nook, a calm hallway, any quiet corner gives so spare a view room to breathe.
