About this work

Monhegan (Creating)

Granite headlands of Monhegan confront the Atlantic in Nicholas Roerich, a painting titled Creating that turns the Maine coast into an act of genesis. Dark rock is still rising from the sea in his vision. Slate and violet masses build the cliffs in broad, loaded strokes, while the water breaks into pale foam against them. Above, the sky churns in cooler blues, and low light catches the ridgelines so each summit reads as fresh-cut stone. The brushwork is direct, almost geological, layering pigment the way strata layer rock. It suits a study or hallway where the horizon can run long, lending any room the salt air and austere grandeur of the Atlantic edge.
