Mongoliya (Olun Sume)

Steppe grass runs gold to the horizon, and on a low rise a white temple, Olun Sume, keeps its vigil under a sky that takes up half the picture. Mongoliya belongs to the Central Asian cycle of Nicholas Roerich. Roerich paints the plain in raw ochre and burnt sienna, ridged with dry gullies and the long shadows of late day. The shrine rises pale against sun-baked ground, its roof catching a last cold light, while distant blue hills cool the far edge of the composition. Every brushstroke reads dry, mineral, wind-scoured. Suited to a study or hallway where earth tones and a strong horizon can carry the wall on their own.
