Monastery in the Forest Set Design for Ivan Susanin

A monastery rises through dense forest, its white walls and dark domes glimpsed between slender trunks. Konstantin Yuon painted this stage setting for Glinka opera Ivan Susanin, where Russian woodland and sacred architecture share one scene. Browns and deep greens dominate the forest floor, broken by pale architecture catching stage light. The trees stand tall and thin, their trunks rendered in quick vertical strokes. Above the cloister walls, onion domes darken against a shadowed canopy, and a narrow path suggests the route Susanin might have taken. Everything is composed for depth, drawing the eye from foreground shadows toward the illuminated buildings. Suited to a study or hallway where theatrical landscape adds atmosphere.
