Monastery (Brahmaputra)

A monastery gathers itself on the riverbank, white walls and dark roofs set against the broad gray sweep of the Brahmaputra. Nicholas Roerich builds the scene in muted tempera-like layers, ochre banks, steel-blue water, and a sky that holds its color low over the hills. prayer flags read as small dark strokes. The buildings sit small and firm while the river takes the light, its surface crosshatched with pale reflections moving downstream. Roerich paints the Himalayan valley with the flat, solemn calm of a place above weather. A study or reading nook suits its quiet gravity.
