Momisa

A woman bends toward the mirror at her dressing table, her white chemise slipping from one shoulder. Bonnard painted Momisa in the intimate register he knew best, the private morning hour when a Paris apartment fills with soft violet light. Look at the color. Lilac and mauve wash across the wallpaper and bedding, while the sitter skin glows warm ochre against all that cool shimmer. Brushwork stays loose, almost trembling, so the reflected face blurs into the glass like a memory. A washbasin, a chair, a scrap of patterned fabric each hold their own small note of rose or blue. A bedroom or dressing room with muted walls gives this canvas the hush it asks for, though a sunlit hallway works too.
