Moika. Three-arch bridge

Three granite arches bridge the dark water of the Moika, their reflections closing into full circles below. Pyotr Konchalovsky records this Petersburg canal scene with a firm post-impressionist hand. Stone parapets line both embankments, and the facades behind rise in muted ochre and grey, windows stacked in quiet rows above the waterline. Loaded brushwork sets the whole scene trembling, every doubled arch wavering into bands of green, gold, and slate. Cool canal light suits a study or an entryway with pale walls; it sits calmly against warm wood floors and dark leather furniture.
