Moat at Breccles

Still water wraps around the base of the house at Breccles, its surface holding the reflection of red brick and the Norfolk sky above. Winston Churchill titled this work Moat at Breccles. Greens dominate, laid in broad confident strokes: mossy reeds at the bank, deep viridian shadow where the water deepens, a pale gleam where light catches the ripples. The masonry glows ochre against the cool blue, its edges softened by brushwork that favors impression over detail. Trees lean into the composition from one side, their foliage broken into dabs of sap green and umber.
