Młyn zimą

A watermill sits heavy and dark at the center of a frozen river, its wooden wheel halted mid-turn by ice. Młyn zimą is Ferdynand Ruszczyc at his most austere. Snow lies thick over the mill roof and banks, painted in broad loaded strokes of lead white and grey lilac. The water beneath is a slab of greenish ice, scratched with pale streaks. Ruszczyc, the Polish painter of the Young Poland generation, lets the bare trees thin out into a chalky sky, and the dark mass of the mill anchors everything against that emptiness. A study or a hallway with cool northern light would carry this winter scene well, especially against slate, charcoal, or unpainted plaster walls.
