Mixed Fruit, Melon Grapes and Apples

Melon sits cut open at the centre, its pale green flesh catching light beside a heavy cluster of grapes. This is Samuel Peploe at his most direct, arranging fruit the way a jeweller lays out stones. Apples carry blocks of red and yellow laid on thick, the paint standing up from the surface in ridges you can almost feel. Grape skins go from blue-black to dusty violet where the light turns. The melon rind shows ribbed green against a cool grey ground, and the shadows beneath the fruit are deep, cool blue rather than brown. Suits a kitchen, dining room, or breakfast nook where food is already the subject.
