Mixed Bouquet with Bluebells, Carnations, and Gladiola

Bluebells nod at the crown of the bouquet, carnations packed beneath and one gladiola spike cutting upward, the whole still life jostling like guests at one of the salons Florine Stettheimer hosted. Periwinkle petals scatter along the top edge, stems crossing at careless angles, while ruffled cups of blush and cream crowd the middle. One coral spike climbs bud by bud up a stiff green shaft, every flower traced in a fine dark contour that keeps the paint flat and storybook clear. A sunroom or a dressing table corner suits it best, somewhere cut flowers are already welcome and guests drift close enough to name each stem.
