Rain has just passed over the Seine, and Robert Henri catches the exact minute when Paris dissolves into pearl grey. Misty Effect, Paris holds that wet air on the surface of the paint, thin washes of violet and smoke layered over a darker city below. Look closely and the brushwork does the work of weather. Rooftops and chimneys sink into a pale blue haze, wet cobbles carry a faint gleam, and one warm note of ochre breaks through the cool wash like a lit window.
