Misty Day in March

Trees in bare bud lean over a thawing riverbank, the whole scene dissolved in pale grey vapour. Ernest Lawson titles it Misty Day in March, and the canvas keeps that promise at every glance. Look closely and the paint sits thick, almost crusted, in creamy whites and cool violets laid over ochre earth and a sliver of brown water. Lawson built his landscapes in heavy impasto, so the mist reads as material, pigment pushed into ridges that catch real light. Bare branches crosshatch the sky, and distant rooftops blur to a whisper. Suited to a study or reading nook where low light deepens the early spring hush.
