Mimizan Lake

Tall pines crowd the shore of Mimizan Lake, their dark trunks reflected in water that holds the last flat light of evening. This landscape by Winston Churchill captures the Landes coast of southwest France, where he painted during holidays between political storms. The brushwork moves fast and wet, laid down with the confidence of a weekend painter who trusted his eye. Deep greens and umber shadows fill the forest edge while the lake surface stays pale, almost silver, breaking only where tree reflections streak across it. Churchill mixes his pigments loosely, letting sky and water merge near the horizon.
