Mimicry synoptic: costume design for the Valle

A figure emerges in costume: sleeves, collar and hem all built from overlapping wedges of color that shimmer against a pale ground. Mimicry synoptic is Giacomo Balla at his most theatrical, a Futurist design made for the stage of the Teatro Valle. Look closely and the geometry does the acting. Compenetrating planes of rose, jade and cobalt cross the torso like folded fabric caught mid-turn, while fine ruled lines run through them, suggesting pleats, seams and the vibration of a body in motion. The palette reads cool against warm, each wedge sliding into its neighbor without a hard edge. Suited to a dressing room, a hallway near a staircase, or any entry where guests pause before moving on.
