Melting Snow

Snow gives way to earth across a wide Latvian field, white drifts sinking into darkened ground as meltwater gathers in shallow pools. Vilhelms Purvitis titled the scene simply, Melting Snow. Grey blue skies press low over the thaw, their clouds reflected in the standing water. Bare trees line the far bank, and the last dirty drifts hold out against patches of exposed soil and the first hint of green. The brushwork sits heavy in the snow, loose in the sky. Suited to a study or a reading room, anywhere the long turn from winter toward spring still holds meaning.
