Mediterranean Coastline

Sunlight flattens the sea into a sheet of hammered silver. Algernon Talmage builds his Mediterranean Coastline from short, loaded strokes of oil, the horizon sitting high so the water claims most of the picture. Cliffs in burnt sienna drop toward the shore, their shadows pooling violet where the rock folds inland. Waves break in strokes of cerulean and white, each crest dragged wet-on-wet so the foam smears into the surface. Fishing boats sit low on the swell, hulls reduced to a few dark dashes of umber. The sky burns pale gold near the horizon line, cooling to grey at the top edge. A seascape like this suits a sunroom or a coastal hallway, anywhere the light shifts through the day and moves with the painted water.
