A field of young wheat fills the foreground, blades painted stroke by stroke so each leaf catches its own sliver of early light. May Morning by Pellizza da Volpedo opens onto a hazy Piedmont spring, the sky washed in pale rose and milk blue above the treeline. Further back, dark cypress and bare poplars hold a thin mist that has not yet burned off, and low hills sit soft against the horizon. Divided brushwork gives the grass a tremble, as if a breeze just moved through it. It belongs in a calm dining room or a hallway with morning sun, where the cool greens read fresh at any hour.
