May in the Mountains

Green hillsides climb toward blue peaks in May in the Mountains, an Ernest Lawson landscape built from thick, layered pigment. Spring arrives at altitude, and the whole slope seems to feel it. Lawson loads the foreground with meadow greens and warm ochre, scumbled until the grass reads almost as texture rather than color. Ridges recede through hazier violets and cobalt, their edges softened the way distance softens them in life. Small cabins and flowering trees anchor the midground, painted with the same impasto energy he gave his Harlem River scenes. A natural fit above a reading chair or in a sunlit hallway, where the mountain air can circulate.
