Maulbek

A stone fortress crowns the ridge in Maulbek, Nicholas Roerichs vision of a Central Asian stronghold. Broken towers rise from the bluff, their walls baked the color of desert bone. Beneath, flat rooftops and low dwellings hug the slope in ochre and umber, each plane catching hard mountain light. The sky above holds a deep, cold blue, its weight pressing the citadel into silhouette. Sparse brushwork leaves the cliff face raw, almost geological, while the ruined masonry reads in quick decisive strokes. Dust and altitude live in every color. Hang it where quiet gravity belongs: a study, a hallway, a reading nook that wants the shadow of an ancient watchtower.
