Massif near the house

A flowering shrub crowds the base of a house in Massif near the house, an Edouard Vuillard garden subject where blooms press right up against the architecture. Vuillard loads the massif with thick, unblended strokes, lilac and violet petals sitting on a lattice of green. The house wall behind it reads as a flat panel of warm cream, its shutter catching slanted afternoon light. Nothing is outlined; forms are built from color butting against color, a hallmark of his Nabi years. Well suited to a sunroom, a breakfast nook, or any corner that wants a garden close at hand.
