Marseilles

The harbor of Marseilles opens in stacked planes of hull, quay and hillside, seen through the clear geometric lens Arthur Segal brought to the port city. Boats crowd the water in tight, faceted forms, their masts a lattice against pale sky. Blocks of ochre and olive build the waterfront row by row, each rooftop and awning reduced to a confident shape. Segal handles shadow as flat slabs of blue and green, letting sunlight fall in hard, unmixed fields across stone and water. The brushwork stays firm, almost structural. A natural fit for a study, hallway or dining room where ordered composition and Mediterranean light can anchor the wall.
