Marine

Sailboats tilt across a flat green sea in Marine, Andre Bauchant charming take on the seacoast. Waves run in short curling strokes, each hull and mast drawn with the direct, unhesitating line that made this French painter a favorite of the Paris avant garde. Look at the water itself: bands of teal and deep blue laid side by side, foam picked out in thick white dabs. The sky sits pale above the horizon, and small figures crowd the shore, painted front-on in Bauchant ingenuous style. Every element keeps its own bold outline, the way a child or a visionary sees it. Hang it in a coastal hallway, a sunroom, or above a reading desk where its salty palette can breathe.
