Marigolds and Tangerines

Marigolds crowd a bowl with tangerines beside them, two oranges against a heap of gold. Felix Vallotton built the whole arrangement from flat, unblended color. The flower heads turn in every direction, petals packed so tightly the blooms read as solid discs of orange and amber. Green leaves cut between them in blunt, simple shapes. The tangerines carry their own small leaves, and the table beneath holds everything with no shadow to speak of. A kitchen shelf or breakfast nook takes this kind of still life well, anywhere morning light already lives.
