Mäntykoski Waterfall

Foam bursts over dark granite in Mäntykoski Waterfall, a view of rushing Finnish rapids from Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The river tears between pine-shadowed banks, white water against near-black stone. Gallen-Kallela paints the torrent with loaded, vigorous brushwork. Cold sprays of lead white and pale blue churn across the surface, while boulders hold deep umber and green reflections. Pines crowd the banks in dark verticals, their silhouettes barely separating from the water. Everything moves: current, spray, flicker of light on wet rock. Made for a study, a hallway, or a reading nook that wants the cold air and sound of the Finnish backwoods close at hand.
