Manor House at Zubrilovka

White columns hold up a pale sky at Zubrilovka, the Russian estate Victor Borisov-Musatov returned to again and again in his art. The manor rises in washed lilac and grey, its classical portico dissolving at the edges like a memory. Below, the park lawn flattens into a band of soft green, while trees along the drive turn violet and rose in the low evening light. Everything is painted with a dry, chalky touch that lets the canvas surface breathe through the color.
