Manjusri Cell, Mongolia

A single stone cell huddles against the Mongolian hills, its low door closed to the wind. Nicholas Roerich gives this hermit dwelling the stillness of a held breath. Dry tempera strokes build the walls in bone white and grey; cobalt shadow settles along the roofline, and violet light washes the far slopes. A thread of smoke, a leaning prayer pole, ground raked with crosshatching: every detail bends toward the silence that belongs to Manjusri, bodhisattva of wisdom.
