Manasbal Lake

Water lies still at the foot of the Himalayas in Manasbal Lake, a Nicholas Roerich landscape built on calm. The basin sits low and glassy, ringed by dark foothills. Roerich paints the slope in deep ultramarine and teal, the ridgelines stacked one behind another until the farthest peaks go almost white. Thin pale bands along the shore mark reeds and cultivated ground, while the water itself holds a single unbroken reflection of the heights. Every edge is drawn clean, tempera-flat, without haze. A quiet presence for a reading room or lakeside study, where stillness is welcome.
